Like so many adoptees, my curiosity gene got the best of me. In today’s world, with so many DNA testing options that are relatively inexpensive and amazingly fruitful, the path to finding family has never been easier. My adoption was in a closed-records state, which presented its own challenges. So together with DNA testing and good old fashioned research, I began untangling the kudzu-like branches of my biological family tree. I ran into as many brick walls as I did amazing coincidences, but in the end I found satisfaction.
Swabbed & Found is my story. Everyone has one about family, whether adopted or not, and I discovered the more I told friends about my adventure of DNA genealogy, the more they insisted I write a book. The oddities, the mysteries, the hope, the disappointments and the incredible connections all presented themselves against a landscape of emotional highs and lows. Every day seemed to insist on taking another deep breath. And moving forward.
So I invite you to join my conversation. I wrote this book as if you and I were sitting around talking at the local watering hole on a warm summer evening. I’m hoping you’ll learn about the fascinating DNA adventures going on as we speak and that you’ll enjoy my experience with it all. Mostly, I’m hoping you’ll learn a bit about yourself, as I did. We’re not always who we think we are. Or aren’t. Good luck and thank you for reading!
